Last month my old Australian friend and brilliant songstress Sophie Moleta visited the UK. It was her first trip back here in fourteen years, a long time had passed since we had seen each other. Sophie and I met in our mid twenties when I visited Perth, Australia with an ex boyfriend. We instantly made a connection through our joint love of music and continued to stay in touch throughout the years. It was a nice surprise to know that the connection between the two of us was still there when she came to stay here in Brighton for a few days...it was like nothing had changed...like old times. That's the beauty of long standing friendships, they become like family. The people we have known throughout the years become irreplaceable because they have known the different stages in our lives and stayed in them. They accepted us for who we are, our flaws, our kindness, and our weaknesses.
Sophie's music has always been a big inspiration to me so when she said she was visiting Brighton I suggested that she perform a house concert at my flat. Sophie loved the idea as she wanted to perform in an environment where her five year old son Ravi could attend and also liked the idea of performing her music in an intimate space.
It was a great honour for me to host a concert for Sophie as I love her music and I felt like it was an opportunity for me to give something back, to return the warm welcome that I have received from many people throughout the years and numerous tours who have kindly hosted concerts for me in their own homes and gardens. Thank you folks!
The concert was a great success and I loved every minute of it. I also invited some very talented friends to perform their music. It was an inspiring evening. There is nothing quite like the intimate experience of listening to music in this setting. I would like to encourage people everywhere to create this kind of experience in their local communities.
