Sharon Lewis first heard Rose Polenzani when she received an unexpected package at her flat in Brighton England a few years ago: a home made tribute record to herself.
American songwriter Rose (who had cited Sharon’s now disbanded duo Pooka as one of her most important influences) had spent the late winter recording the covers at home. Rose wanted Sharon to know especially in the wake of the duo’s break up, that her music had meant the world to someone she had never even met. Bowled over by Rose’s voice and interpretation of the songs, Sharon invited Rose to Brighton to perform a concert together. They also recorded a duet "Ellen West" a Throwing Muses song that was released in America by indie label Kuma Chan Records.
So successful was their collaboration that Sharon and Rose have continued to be touring partners in the States and in the UK and are proud to present their first album together called Kings and Queens.
THE ALBUMIndependently released in the States last year for their 2007 US tour. Kings and Queens is a home made limited edition CD featuring a collection of classic songs penned by Sharon and Rose. Recorded completely live in the studio London 2005 on the last day of their UK tour, the album features the pair on guitar, piano and harmonies. Also included are 2 lo-fi cover versions of Sharon Lewis’s songs performed by Rose Polenzani recorded live in the subway at the Porter Square T stop in Cambridge MA. The latter recordings were a contributing factor to Sharon and Rose’s eventual collaboration and friendship. These songs were originally on the tribute CD Rose made for Sharon covering her songs. It was at the end of Rose’s first visit to Sharon in England that they recorded Ellen West by Throwing Muses. This track is also featured on the CD. Kings and Queens is available to buy at gigs or as a digital download from cdbaby.com
